Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act · SBC 2004, c. 2, Part 6

HOW LONG ITEMS MAY STAY

The Act sets a limit of 6 years for a debt or collection. The exact section and its exceptions are in the Act. Section 109(1)(o).

A reporting agency must not include in a report given under section 108 (1) (a) [to whom reports may be given] any of the following: … (o) any other information adverse to the individual's interest 6 years after the event that gave rise to the information;

YOUR RIGHT TO QUESTION A LINE

In British Columbia, the credit reporting law has no dispute process. Your right to fix an error comes from the privacy law instead. The company must answer within 30 days. If it will not fix it, it must note your side on the file. This is at ss.24 and 29 of the Personal Information Protection Act.

The Act has no dispute section; you can still ask the bureau to check an item.

Nothing here is legal advice. Where a card shows a quote, it is the government's own text, with the date we read it. Where it says “Quoted section coming”, we are still checking the exact section. The card gives the rule in plain words and links the official page. Accurate information stays on your report; we help you question what is wrong or out of date.

  • Nothing leaves without your say. You read, you approve.
  • We never show you a number and call it your credit score.
