HOW LONG ITEMS MAY STAY

The Act sets a limit of 6 years for a debt or collection. The exact section and its exceptions are in the Act. Section 39(1)(d).

A credit report shall not contain … (d) information as to debt 6 years after it has become due, unless the debt has been acknowledged by the debtor or the debtor's agent either in writing or by making part payment or partial satisfaction of the debt, in which case the 6 year period runs from the date of the most recent acknowledgment of the debt;

YOUR RIGHT TO QUESTION A LINE

In Newfoundland and Labrador, the credit part of the law has no dispute process. You can ask the Director under the Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act to order a correction, and the agency must comply. This is at s.43(1). You can also dispute directly with the bureau, which is its own practice, not the law.

The Act has no dispute section; you can still ask the bureau to check an item.

Nothing here is legal advice. Where a card shows a quote, it is the government's own text, with the date we read it. Where it says “Quoted section coming”, we are still checking the exact section. The card gives the rule in plain words and links the official page. Accurate information stays on your report; we help you question what is wrong or out of date.
